Job Description

A regional water wholesaler and retailer located in the Santa Clarita Valley area is seeking an experienced Accountant Technician to join their team! Incumbents are expected to perform the full scope of professional accounting duties with minimum supervision. Successful performance requires a thorough knowledge of governmental accounting procedures and the ability to exercise sound independent judgment.

In this position, the Accountant performs a variety of professional and technical accounting work supporting cash control, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, asset replacement reporting and the development of new automated systems, and general accounting processes; prepares financial and statistical statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and governmental accounting standards; audits agency funds and accounts including audit schedules; completes bank, investment, and fiscal agent account reconciliations.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs a variety of clerical and technical accounting duties, which depending on the area of assignment may include accounts payable, accounts receivable, utility accounts, deposits, and general accounting duties.

  • Handles accounts payable; sorts and distributes invoices from vendors; contacts vendors regarding invoices and payments; processes invoices; receives departmental approval; enters all pertinent information into the agency's computer system; generates, prints, and mails checks for payment; files and maintains copies of checks with invoice backups; creates various accounts payable reports. 

  • Assists in the preparation of the payroll for distribution, which involves reviewing timesheets for accuracy; calculating hours; inputting payroll information from timesheets; running checks and applicable reports; provides payroll information to employees. 

  • Assists with the preparation of reports and analyses for rate setting.

  • Maintains customer database; processes corrections to customer accounts, closing bills, new accounts, and adjustments; inputs into a computer journal entries and cash receipts. 

  • Maintains cost accounting records for projects and reconciles advances and deposits to actual costs. 

  • Assists in preparing reports and budgets; prepares and inputs cash receipts and journal entries. 

  • Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of state/local agencies, agency management,and staff. 

  • Operates a computer and assigned softwareincluding word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Job Requirements

  • QUALIFICATIONS(The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification.)

     

    Education and/or Experience

     

    Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for an Accounting Technician II.  A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess:

     
    • Two (2) years of general clerical experience, including financial or statistical recordkeeping or cashiering, of which one (1) year is comparable or equivalent to that of an Accounting Technician I. 

    • Related college course work may substitute for the experience requirement on a year-for-year basis.

     

    Licenses and Certifications

     
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver's license. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

     

    KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES(The following are a representative sample of the KSA’s necessary to perform essential duties of the position.) 

     

    Knowledge/Skills of:

    • Modern principles and practices of financial recordkeeping, report writing, bookkeeping, and basic governmental accounting.

    • Standard office and administrative procedures and practices.

    • Bank deposits and cash handling procedures.

    • Basic principles of mathematics.

    • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

    • Operation of a computer and assigned software.

    • Proper English, spelling, and grammar.

     

    Ability to:

    • Prepare, maintain, and reconcile various financial, accounting, and statistical records.

    • Learn and excel in computer applications and software for accounts payable/receivable and reporting.

    • Keep accurate records. 

    • Writereports and perform tracking specific to assigned department.

    • Perform cashiering duties accurately.

    • Respond to questions from the public and agency personnel regarding policies and procedures for assigned area.

    • Perform mathematical calculations quickly and accurately.

    • Interpret, explain, and apply applicable laws, codes, and regulations.

    • Read, interpret, and record data accurately.

    • Operate a computer and assigned software.

    • Organize, prioritize, and follow-up on work assignments.

    • Work independently and as part of a team.

    • Follow written and oral directions.

    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Compensation: $29-32/Hour 

Position type: Full-time, temporary approx. 6 months. 

Schedule: Monday – Thursday & every other Friday, (9/80 Schedule)

Hours: 7:30am-5:30pm
